love my garden

It's a year since we moved into our bungalow.  At the moment the garden is our long term project.  Long term because we don't have a couple of thousand in our backpockets as you see in all the TV programmes. For example 'Big Dreams Small spaces' with Monty Don.

The programme is really good and gives loads of ideas...but generally the people engaging on their garden projects have money to put their plans into action.




Another fabulous programme I've enjoyed recently is the Autistic gardener.

 Really quirky with a different way of looking at planning and designing gardens.  But again the clients have plenty to spend.

At most we probably have about £20 month that we can allocate... but we have time. So instead of employing landscapers etc. most of the back breaking work will be done by yours truly!!
But the first biggie removal of hedge and replacement with a fence has been done!  Thanks to three of our sons who volunteered their time, muscles and know how!



So phase one (well probably phase two as the council have already removed the 60ft conifer that took up a huge amount of space.  Very pretty in winter but it's size was taking all the light and it was dangerous in high winds)

So off to RHS flower show for inspiration!!

  In May 2020, my wonderful husband and lifetime companion died of pancreatic cancer.  Honestly, I didn't want to go on without him, he was my confidant, my counselor, and he kept me grounded when the world seemed to go mad.  But I have children, grandchildren, and now great-grandchildren (at 67 I'm really not old enough!)  I'm blessed so much and with good health.  So almost two years on, I'm putting my life back together.  I still have the mornings when I'd rather pull the covers over my head and not get up, but I live in a first-floor apartment, and Taffie my lab collie cross, has to go out...and she lets me know! Bless her.  At night, memories haunt me, and sometimes in the half-waking, half-sleeping hours I forget and talk to him, think he's next to me, reach out and remember. Chitting potatoes

First steps to my veggie garden... After buying seed potatoes from Aldi (I've never tried theirs before...time will tell.) I decided to start chitting them.  I've grown potatoes in the past and old egg boxes are brilliant for this. But I'd forgotten to keep mine and I didn't fancy ferreting around in the dustbin for them!  So I used seed trays instead, they should be ok but it was a bit of a balancing act placing them upright...never mind figuring out where the shoots were. I worked on the principle that where the more pronounced marks were that was the right way up. Then while it was still dry I took some photos of the back garden. I thought this would help me plan my veg plot better.  My plan is to make raised beds where at the moment there is lawn.    I'm not sure where I'm going to put the washing line yet. I've noticed that both Monty Don and Alan Titchmarsh never seem to draw up plans with the washing line in...probably wouldn't mak

A year later...

2016 passed in a blur... I'm an old hand now at this retirement thing!    Walking the dog is a daily routine now...but still a pleasure.  Bungalow is decorated apart from the bathroom where we had a wet room installed to make access easier for my husband.  Thinking of changing the sink unit in the kitchen...just thinking.  And after gaining loads of weight last year...I'm back on track and have lost 15 lbs since the second week in January, also developing an interest in exercise. So far, conifers have come down, fencing has gone up and I barrowed in a ton of soil last year to make the back flowerbed. The soil is essentially heavy clay so I'm sure there'll be a lot more barrowing this year!! I've decided to get rid of the lawn and turn most of that space
